- Tsunami hazard assessment: Maps identifying
the areas of likely tsunami flooding for at-risk communities
are used to guide local tsunami hazard planning. Inundation
maps are created using a combination of numerical
models assuming possible tsunami scenarios.
NOAA performs research and develops models
that are used to forecast tsunamis and create tsunami inundation
and evacuation maps. Forecast models are provided to the NOAA's
Weather Service forecasters and the Inundation models and maps
are provided to State and national planners and emergency managers.
Models are critical to using data to issue warnings to communities
